“Hitchcock’s Notorious : An Exploration of Anima & Animus”

In Notorious, Alfred Hitchcock weaves romance and suspense into a dark fairy tale of power, domination, and addiction versus compassion and relationship—a tale of timeless significance and current relevance. Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant’s intensely passionate but deeply conflicted romance provides a rich matrix for the exploration of Jung’s notorious yet essential ideas about the anima and

animus archetypes. Whether seen from the perspective of the collective or the personal, Notorious serves as an inspiring primer on the function of anima and animus and their relationship to the development of personality.

Rick L. Overman, Psy.D, is a licensed psychologist and Jungian psychoanalyst in private practice in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton . Dr. Overman is a senior training analyst for the Florida Association of Jungian Analysts and a past president of the Center. His prior CJSSF film presentations include “Forbidden Planet”, “Finding Neverland,”, “American Beauty”, and “Eyes Wide Shut.”

Learning Objectives: Following the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

1.   Understand the Jungian concepts of archetypal anima and animus;

2.   Identify and appreciate specific visual, cinematic representations of anima

        and animus figures as manifested in the particular historical context

         portrayed in Hitchcock’s film Notorious;

2.    Learn preliminary approaches to therapeutically identifying and integrating participants’ own and/or (in the case of clinicians) their clients’ encounters with these archetypal experiences.

Directions to the Riverside Hotel: Take I-95 to Broward Blvd.exit, take Broward Blvd. East past Federal Highway for a half block to SE 8thAvenue, turn right and go past Las Olas Blvd then right on SE 4th Street to back entrance of the Riverside where valet parking is $8 for the day.  The Riverside usually put us on the 8th Floor in the Tower.
